Great News about our Current Students! Esther Njuguna (double major in mathematics and aviation business) has been selected for admission into the graduate programs at Columbia University and Boston University for graduate study in biostatistics and into the graduate program at MIT in the department of civil and environmental engineering. She has accepted MIT's offer and will attend MIT for the fall semester of 2012, where she will pursue dual graduate degrees in operations research and transportation. In addition, Esther was selected for membership into Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and was the recipient of the mathematics department’s award for the Outstanding Mathematics Student for the 2011-2012 academic year. Steve Newcomb (triple major in mathematics, flight operations and aviation technical systems) has been selected into the graduate program at Boston University for the fall semester of 2012, where he will pursue a master of science degree in actuarial science. Steve was selected for membership into Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Heather Carnes (mathematics major with a business minor) was selected for membership into Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Heather is an outstanding student-athlete who was recognized as an Academic All-Conference in softball. She will be teaching high school mathematics after graduation and will begin graduate school in January 2013. E. Paige Aaron (mathematics major with teaching certification at the secondary level), a rising senior and student-athlete in volleyball, was one of two recipients of the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Paige is the fourth Averett student to receive the award since 1999. In addition, Paige was selected for membership into Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, was recognized as an Academic All-American as well as an Academic All-Conference, was selected to the First Team Academic All-District team and, most recently, the conference All-Tournament Team. What are recent graduates of this major doing? The person I am today is because of education I received from Averett and I think about my Averett professors often. Thank you for your mathematical guidance. This program opened many doors for me in understanding mathematics with its focus on theory and the practice of writing proper and formal proofs. I was also introduced to logic in a very in-depth manner. Since I frequently study advanced science and mathematics texts for recreation and enjoyment, I am now able to read and understand material that I could not before getting my degree from Averett. Averett University prepared me in everyway possible for life after college. I learned so much about mathematics, education and myself while in this program. As a high school mathematics teacher, I am able to incorporate the ideas learned at Averett into my lessons each day for my students, and they truly benefit from this experience. The math professors at Averett will always hold a special place in my heart.
