A variety of internship opportunities are available for theatre majors. In the past, students have found positions at:
In addition to internships, students have plenty of opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the theatre department itself. Every year, the department performs up to four productions which allows students to gain experience in production and performance. All theatre majors are required to serve as stage manager for at least one major drama production and as chairperson at least once for each production crew (makeup, lighting, costumes, deck and house management). Students also have the opportunity to work backstage with Averett's Arts@Averett Series doing lights and sound.
Advanced students are offered the opportunity to conduct individual studies in the areas of acting, directing and design. These studies are tied to the theatre department's productions.
Students who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree are fully prepared for that as well. Graduates have pursued a master's degree in acting, directing, design and children's theatre at a number of colleges and universities including Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Western Illinois University.
