Freshman Student Military Page

The first step is to apply to VA directly for education benefits.  If you are unsure as to which benefit(s) you may be eligible for, visit the Roadmap for Success at  or call 888-442-4551 to speak with a VA Education representative.

After choosing the desired benefit, complete the appropriate application form through VON-APP located at  The application can be submitted electronically through this portal.  Please make sure you receive a confirmation number acknowledging VA’s receipt of the application.

Application Forms:  Choose One

  • Complete VA Form 22-1990 for Post 9-11 (Chapter 33), Montgomery MGIB (Chapter 30), MGIB-Selected Reserve (1606), Reserve Educational Assistance Program (1607), or Post-Vietnam Era Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 32)
  • Complete VA Form 22-1990E for Post 9-11 (Chapter 33) if you are a dependent and the service member has transferred entitlement.
  • Complete VA Form 22-1995- Use this form when: you're changing schools, you're changing your educational, professional, vocational goal, you left your program due to unsatisfactory attendance, progress, or conduct; and you're now reentering the same program, or you were receiving VA education benefits as a veteran and now wish to receive benefits while on active military duty.
  • Complete VA Form 22-5490 for Dependents (Chapter 35)
  • Complete VA Form 28-1900 for Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)

Once you have applied to the VA for education benefits, the Buffalo Regional Office or your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will notify you in writing as to the outcome of the application within a few weeks. 

  • Documents needed by School Certifying Officials:
  • A copy of the application that you was submitted to the VA
  • A copy of the eligibility letter you received from VA

After you register for courses at Averett University, we will certify your schedule with the VA.

Military Scholarships

In recognition of the service that the military provides to this nation, Averett University offers a special scholarship for all military members (active or reserve), DOD civilian employees, State National Guard employees, and their family members. Graduate and Professional Studies students must submit their applications to their enrollment counselor during the admissions process. This scholarship is available for all degree programs statewide and provides a 25% tuition reduction to those students enrolled on a full-time basis. This scholarship cannot be combined with academic scholarships offered through the traditional program.

For service members and veterans of the U.S. Air Force, we'll need a transcript from the Community College of the Air Force.
coast guard For service members and veterans of the U.S. Coast Guard, we'll need a transcript from the U.S. Coast Guard Institute.

As a member of the DNS, we have agreed to adhere to academic policies intended to support military students in their academic endeavors towards degree completion.

Averett University is approved for membership in SOCMAR and SOCCOAST at the bachelor’s degree level.
