Celebrating Black History

For more than 35 years, Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States. Prior to the month-long celebration, there was a week-long celebration that began around 1926. Averett, like the rest of country, has a slate of activities planned throughout the month to celebrate.

• On Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 11:15 a.m., join us for a tour of the Holbrook-Ross Historic District here in Danville. We will be meeting at the intersection of Holbrook and Ross streets. The tour costs $5. For more information and to reserve your spot, contact Joyce Wilburn at 434-770-1974.

• The University will host an African Dance Night on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Faye Brandon at 434-791-7146.

• A Gospel Night will be held Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Feleta Morton at 434-791-7100.

• The University will wrap up its events with a Health Awareness Day on Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Holly Kilby at 434-791-5788.
