J.D. Shaw is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cougars’ offense, having joined the team with head coach Mike Dunlevy in 2002 season. He serves as the assistant head coach, as well as the offensive coordinator and the Quarterbacks/ Running Backs coach.

Shaw’s offense has consistently been rated one of the top in the USA South, and 2006 was no exception. The Cougars were ranked second in total offense managing 373.5 yards per game on the season, and third in scoring offense with 32.0 points per game. Shaw’s pass-heavy play calling last year showed as the Cougars ranked first in passing offense with 237.2 yards per game.

Shaw continued to help develop great players, as well. Averett placed eight offensive players on the All-Conference team, including two to the first team.  Shaw recruited and coached Averett's first Offensive All-American selection, Running Back Kyle Wilson.  Jeff Hughley, a standout wide receiver and favorite target of Shaw’s plays, now plays professional football in the Arena2 Football League.

Before leading the Cougar’s offense, Shaw coached at Waynesburg College, where he was part of one of the most successful eras in that program’s history. At Waynesburg, Shaw was a receiver and tight end coach, and then worked his way to offensive coordinator in five years. He was a part of four consecutive winning seasons and a President’s Athletic Conference Championship in 1998. In 1999, Shaw’s offense was ranked 20th in the nation in points per game with 35.6.

Before Waynesburg, Shaw was the offensive coordinator and secondary coach at Waynesburg Central High School. While in college, Shaw worked as a student coach at West Virginia University. During his time at WVU, he worked with quarterbacks and receivers and was part of two bowl teams (the 1989 Gator Bowl and the 1988 Fiesta Bowl).

Shaw holds a B.S. in education and an M.S. in childhood motor development from WVU. Shaw and his daughter, Taylor, reside in Danville.

 

Tim Dunlevy

Director of Football Operations

Tim Dunlevy enters his seventh season with the Cougars, having joined in 2002 with his son, head coach Mike Dunlevy. He serves the team as the Director of Football Operations, where he oversees the day-to-day operations including the handling of equipment and travel needs for the team. Dunlevy helps out on the field as well, contributing as a defensive line and specialist coach.

Aside from football, Dunlevy is greatly respected as a business consultant.. He was worked for, and owned, many successful businesses of his own. He also serves Averett as the director of sports operations. He and his wife, Linda, currently reside in Danville.

 

Cornelius Coleman

Cornelius Coleman enters his second season, taking charge of the defensive line. Coleman joins Averett from Robert Morris University, where he performed various roles within the school’s admissions and compliance offices.

Coleman graduated from Waynesburg College, where Averett head coach Mike Dunlevy was coach before joining the Cougars. Coleman played four years and was a three-year starter under Dunlevy. He was selected to the All-Conference First Team for the President’s Athletic Conference in 1999, and was an All-American Honorable Mention. In 1998, Waynesburg won the PAC Conference Championship with Coleman and Dunlevy’s help.

After college, Coleman enjoyed a brief professional career. In 2000, he started all 18 games at defensive end for the Dayton Skyhawks of the Indoor Football League. Coleman moved on, and in 2002, he started in eight games and played 10 for the Roanoke Steam of the Arena Football League at defensive end and tight end.

Coleman graduated from Waynesburg in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication. He also holds two Masters degrees; he has a Master of Business Administration degree from Waynesburg, and a Master of Science in Sport Management from Robert Morris University. Coleman is currently working towards a Doctor of Education degree from Argosy University. He lives in Danville.

 

Phil Stanley

Offensive Line Coach

Phil Stanley enters his second season with the Cougars and his first as the Offensive LIne Coach.  Stanley was a standout offensive linemen for 4 years with the Averett University . 

Stanley played in front of many of Averett’s best players, opening holes that enabled records to be set. His sophomore year, Stanley helped running back Tracey Smithers set many rushing records that weren’t broken until Kyle Wilson hit his stride. His junior and senior years, Stanley helped protect quarterback Scott Swann, and the Cougar passing game was the best in the league.   Stanley's positive coaching style has made an immediate impact on the Cougar Offensive Line this spring .  The Offensive LIne has seen significant strength and speed gains in  the most productive off season in years.

Stanley graduated from Averett with a degree in Criminal Justice/Sociology. He currently lives in Danville.

 

Max Roach

Wide Receivers/Recruiting Coordinator

Max Roach rejoins the Cougars for his second year of coaching. Roach joined the Cougars on the field in 2001, the year before Mike Dunlevy took the helm. He served as the punter for three years, before making the shift to wide receiver as a senior.

In his three years as a punter, Roach tallied 1,566 yards. At receiver, Roach averaged 15.7 yards per catch. His longest reception was 29 yards, and he scored one touchdown.

After Roach graduated from Averett University with a degree in Physical Education in 2005, he stayed on with Dunlevy for one season as an assistant coach. Roach then moved away from coaching for a brief time after he accepted a job in Averett University’s Admissions department. Roach currently lives in Danville, and is working towards his Master of Education degree at Averett.

 

Phil Kleckler

Linebackers

Phil Kleckler joins the Cougars for his second season as Linebacker Coach., Hailing originally from Rockton, Illinois, he graduated from Monmouth College in Illinois and was a three-year letter winner on the football team. At Monmouth, Kleckler received two all-conference awards, and an academic all-conference award. He was also selected as the Defensive Coachable Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006.

Kleckler also served on the staff at Camp All-Star, where he was able to coach young players and help them become better players. After graduation, Kleckler served as a Parks & Recreation director in Illinois, before heading to Averett.

Kleckler graduated from Monmouth with a double major in History and Physical Education. He now lives in Danville whit his wife Randi and is working towards a Master’s of Business Administration.

 
 

Patrick Bolen

Offensive Line Assistant

 

Patrick Bolen begins his second year on the sidelines with the Cougars. Bolen was a standout player at Christiansburg High School until he graduated in 1996. He has been coaching football since 1998, previously serving as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Christiansburg High School. Bolen is currently attending Averett as an undergraduate and working as a student assistant coach.   Bolen has been a key contributor in building unity  in an offensive line group that had a very successful spring.

Bolen lives in Danville with his wife Heidi.

 

Chris Hodnett

Tight Ends

 

Chris Hodnett enters his fifth year as a student assistant for the Cougars, having started his freshman year helping the team from the sidelines.

Hodnett helped coach the quarterbacks and receivers his first three seasons. Last season he was promoted to Tight Ends coach and will again guide a talented group of  men that anchor the diversity of Averett's balanced attack.

Hodnett has plenty of previous experience to deliver to young players, having been a standout quarterback at Chatham High School. Hodnett holds a degree in Physical Education with a minor in Coaching from Averett. He is currently seeking his Masters in Education.

 

Jason Barrow

Jason Barrow has been a part of the Averett coaching staff since the 2005 season, specializing in guiding the linebackers. Barrow’s tutelage helped Jermaine Moore become one of the best linebackers in school history, receiving the USA South Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-South Region First Team nod from the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. 

Barrow joined Averett after coaching at Bartlett Yancey High School for three years. At Bartlett Yancey, he coached receivers, linebackers, and served as the defensive coordinator his last two seasons. Barrow also assisted the Averett defensive staff in 2003 doing video breakdown and analysis.

A graduate of Bassett High School in Virginia, Barrow lives in Blanch, N.C. with his wife Lori. Both are active in youth ministry at Community Baptist Church in Yanceyville, N.C.

 
 

Dave Thomas

Defensive Assistant

 

Dave Thomas joined Averett on the field in the 2003 season and played four seasons with the Cougars. Today, he is embarking on a new stage of his career as an assistant coach. Through four years on the field, Thomas totaled 62 tackles and provided an anchor on the defensive line for linebackers such as Kelvin Hutcheson and 2006 USA South Defensive Player of the Year Jermaine Moore.

Thomas will assist Cornelius Coleman with the defensive line, providing the young players with four years of strong first hand experience. Thomas is currently an undergraduate student at Averett, majoring in Sports Wellness.

 

Jeff Stein

Defensive Assistant

 

Jeff Stein enters his second season assisting Mike Dunlevy, having spent the last four seasons with the Cougars as a player. Stein was a standout linebacker and special teams player during his career at Averett.  . In three years at the linebacker position, Stein managed 143 tackles including 21.5 tackles for a loss.

Stein performed as a member of one of the most talented linebacker corps in the school’s history. He played alongside Jermaine Moore, Kelvin Hutcheson, and Jason Everson, and was one of the strongest players on the team for several years. Stein is currently enrolled as an undergraduate at Averett, pursuing a degree in Education.

 

Al Smith

Kickers /Punters/ Specialists

 

Al Smith enters his eighth season with the Cougars working with the specialits.  Coach Smith is the only coach on the staff that has been with Averett Foottball since the program started in 2000. His impact has been  significant having coached Sean Sullivan (the first kicker in school history to play professionally) as well as All-Conference  Punter James Thurnes and All-Confernce placekicker Chris Ashcraft. 

Coach Smith has served as a volunteer coach for George Washington High School in Danville as well as working with other youth league sports.A graduate of Lees McRae College, Smith played football for Bobcats in 1961 and 1962 while earning his degree in Law Enforcement Administration.

Coach Smith currently resides in Danville with his wife Becky. They have two sons. Brandon is 32 and Jason is 28

 
Freddie Vicks
Team Chaplain

Pastor Vicks enters his second season with the Cougars as Team Chaplin. Aside from handling team chapels, Pastor Vicks  also organizes the community service projects the Cougars participate in twice a year.   A native of Danvile, Pastor Vicks  has served on the pastoral staff of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for 32 years.  Fifteen of those years he was Associate Pastor and Minister of Youth Education.  He's served as Chaplain for George Washington High School for 30 years and has also served as Team Chaplain for the Atlanta Braves Single A team the Danville Braves for 13 years.  A graduate of Liberty University, Vicks was the ninth student accepted to Liberty University and a founding class member of Liberty when it was established in 1971.  He is married to the former Phyllis Ann McGregor of Java, Virginia.  They have two married children, Angela and Derick and four grandchildren, Tyler, Austin, Braxton and Caroline.
