Averett University announced the addition of cheerleading head coach Kristen Ashworth to the Cougar family in the Fall of 2006.

A native of Chatham, Virginia, Ashworth attended undergraduate classes at Virginia Tech and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Marketing Management and Economics in May 2002. Ashworth first came to Averett in 2002 when she began in the Master’s program.

While attending Averett, Ashworth was a teacher at Chatham High School and she began coaching the junior varsity cheerleading squad, where she remained for a year. In 2003, Ashworth took over the varsity squad for Chatham. She graduated from the GPS program with a Masters of Education Degree in May 2005.

Ashworth has had great success with her cheerleading squad at Chatham. Most recently, her team made first place finishes in several categories at the Universal Cheerleading Association Camp in 2006. In 2005, her squad received first place in the Danville Register & Bee Holiday Shootout Cheerleading Competition. At the Cheer Excellence/National Cheerleading Association Camp, Ashworth’s team received the Champion Chant Award in 2005 and 2004, and in 2004 received the Top Team Award at the same event. Also at the Cheer Excellence/National Cheerleading Association Camp in 2003, Ashworth’s first year, Chatham received a bid to attend the National Cheerleading Association National Championships as well as the Champion Chant Award, the Top Team Award, the Stunt Safety Award, and the Leadership Award.

Ashworth continues to teach and coach varsity cheerleading at Chatham while accepting her duties with the Cougar Cheerleaders.
