About the Coach

Averett University director of athletics Charles Harris announced Sept. 8, 2006 the appointment of Robert Porter to the head lacrosse coaching position at Averett. Porter replaces Katie Talbert, who resigned in late summer to become the head women’s soccer coach at Queens University in Charlotte.

“I am delighted to have Rob join our staff,” Harris said. “He has great experience, is passionate, and of high moral character. His ideals support Averett’s philosophy and I look for him to make a large impact on our team - not only on the field, but also in the lives of our student-athletes.”

Porter, a native of Fairfax, Va. is a graduate of Longwood University with a degree in Graphic Design. While at Longwood, Porter was an assistant coach for one season under Janet Grubbs during the Lancers’ Division I transitional season. That team went 15-1, and defeated Virginia Tech in a triple-overtime match.

“I am excited about the opportunity to coach this team,” Porter said. “I would like to thank Charles and the rest of the Averett family for the confidence they have in me. This team has a lot of potential, so I am anxious to get on the field and build on last year’s success.”

Since leaving Longwood in 2004, Porter has been a head coach at Lees-McRae University. In his two season there, he coached a first team all-conference player and also an Academic All-American. His teams at Lees-McRae had a GPA of 3.25 or higher both seasons. Porter is also very active in the lacrosse camp circuit. He attended Merestead Camps and Triple Edge based out of Northern Virginia.
