On June 15, 2007, Stefanie Clayton was introduced by Averett director of athletics Charles S. Harris as the Cougars head softball coach. Clayton, who served as an assistant coach during the 2007 season and was a student-athlete on the AU squad the previous four seasons, is the fourth head coach in the program’s history.
Clayton, a Danville, VA native, is a 2006 graduate of Averett and is familiar with Danville area softball, as she was a former standout at Tunstall High School in Dry Fork. For the 2007 season, Clayton played a large role in the Averett recruiting efforts under Kathy Bocock, who resigned the softball position in May.
During her four years as a student-athlete, Clayton helped the team to a USA South Conference Championship in 2004. That team was the first team in the program’s history to advance to the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, Clayton was chosen as a team captain and was a starter in the outfield.
Clayton was also very involved in the campus community as a Cougar student-athlete. She played a large role in AU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. Clayton also spearheaded many community service projects while serving on the committee and represented Averett at the national convention.
Clayton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies, with concentrations in English, Social Studies and Education. She is also currently a graduate student at Averett, working towards her Masters of Education.
