Aviation Large and Smallcady

Dr. Lyle Cady, associate professor of business administration for the Adult Professional Program in the Tidewater region recently taught two courses in strategic management, one in Chesapeake and one in Newport News. One of the course requirements of the course is for each student team to locate an organization and prepare a visit to interview the senior management team in order to understand the strategies used by the organization.

The Newport News group had a number of NASA employees and decided to interview NASA management. The entire class visited the NASA Langley Research Center site in Hampton and interviewed Kenneth Winter, the chief financial officer. The class learned the Langley site is the oldest NASA facility, and they also discovered the business strategies used by NASA.

The Chesapeake group visited the Tidewater Flight Center, a company offering flight instructor and aircraft rentals at the Chesapeake Airport. The students interviewed Andrew Johnson, the owner of the company. He started the flight center with one aircraft and one employee, with himself as the flight instructor. He continues to expand and will shortly complete certification to train foreign pilots. Johnson he knows about Averett University?s aviation program and has employed a graduate of the program as a flight instructor.

"These two different organizations demonstrate that strategy applies to all organizations, large and small, profit and not for profit and through this real world experience the Averett University MBA program gives our students the skill sets to understand the use of strategy in all types of organizations," said Cady.
