To Market, To Market
Jut's Café is now selling "local organic produce" ranging from heirloom tomatoes, sweet potatoes, assorted peppers, squashes and greens.

The café also features a new espresso machine. Stop by for that extra jolt of caffeine when you're sluggish.


Sweet Treat
At 10 a.m., Sept. 9, a local company, "Dolceuno," will be offering samples of gelato. The gelato is made with fresh, local ingredients. Stop by and try it out!

And I Would Walk 500 Miles
While Lee Sandstead, assistant professor of art, did not walk 500 miles, he did spend the summer walking nearly 600 miles across Northern Spain. Lee traveled along the ancient pilgrimage route known as the "Way of St. James" - or the Camino de Santiago, as it is referred to in Spain. Here are some pictures he took on his journey.







Be All You Can Be
This year's round of resident assistants (RAs) have participated in a number of training exercises as they have prepared for the new academic year. In July, 21 RAs went to Blue Ridge Learning Center where they completed the ropes course. The RAs also worked with all of the Aramark staff (housekeeping, maintenance and security) in a morning of round-table discussions to address ways in which the two groups could work together to serve the students. The discussions were based on the Aramark Service model - THRIVE (thoughtful, heartfelt, results driven, innovative, valued and trusted and engaged).



NKOTB (New Kids on the Block) @ Averett

Michael Fisher is the new maintenance director of Aramark Facilities. He worked at Wilkins & Co. as maintenance director for the rental division for five years.
humphries Bonnie Humphries is the new distance education specialist in the IDEAL Program. She graduated in May with a BBA degree. She previously worked at Walmart, where she was an office associate for 15 years. Bonnie's office is located in 206 Main Hall, and she can be reached at ext. 17261 or bhumphri@averett.edu.
jones Terri Jones is the University's new coordinator for conferences, camps and special events. Terri is the contact for catered meals and the scheduling of the University's various facilities. She brings to Averett nearly a decade of similar university experience in facilitating and managing special events. Terri can be reached at ext. 15625 or terrijones@averett.edu.



People Behind the Scenes

Juanita Eanes is the assistant director of security. Juanita began her career at Averett in May of 2005, working as a security guard. She was promoted to assistant director in October 2009. Previously, she worked as a correction officer for the state of North Carolina. Juanita has an associate's degree in criminology and SURG TECH/Medical assistant.
fitzgerald Traci Fitzgerald has also been employed with Aramark as a housekeeper for two years. She was recently promoted to academic supervisor of housekeeping. Prior to working for Aramark, Traci was assistant director of housekeeping for Piedmont Mall. In her spare time, Traci enjoys singing.
fitzgerald Jacqueline "Jackie" Gunn has been employed with Aramark as a housekeeper for two years. She was recently promoted to residential housekeeping supervisor. Prior to employment with Aramark, Jackie was the dietary supervisor at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She also worked for Nestle Refrigerated Foods and is a former volunteer with Project Literacy.
fitzgerald Alonzo Jones was recently promoted to director of Aramark Facilities. Alonzo is entering his 11th year at Averett. He previously served in leadership positions as housekeeping supervisor and assistant director of facilities. He served on the Danville School Board for six years and was elected to Danville City Council in May 2010.
fitzgerald Shelia Smith joined the Aramark team as operational manager of facilities, having previously served as bookstore manager. Sheila is in her 12th year of serving Averett. She is pleased of the opportunity to continue working with such a great team of people.
fitzgerald Jamie Walker, '06, is the director of security. He has worked for University's security office since May 2004 and as director of security since February 2007. Prior to coming to Averett, Jamie worked as a police officer with the city of Martinsville. He holds an associate's degree in criminal justice and a bachelor's degree in history.
