Davenport Painting Donated to Averett

The Piedmont Health Foundation, formerly the Danville Regional Foundation, donated a Carson Davenport painting to Averett earlier this summer. The oil on canvas, entitled "Wild Ponies at Chincoteague," was part of a collection that belonged to the former Stratford College. The painting, which is appraised at more than $10,000, features running ponies converging in the center of the picture.

The new painting hangs over the mantle on the first floor of The Schoolfield House Booksellers in the room on the left as you enter the building. A second Davenport painting - "A Morning Over Danville," - which was donated two years ago, hangs above the opposite mantle on the right. Several other works by Davenport are also hanging in the building.

Davenport was chair of the Averett College Art Department from 1943 until his retirement in 1969. The University now owns 67 works in oil, watercolor, and other media by this renowned painter.
