Jazzy Night in Jut's

The University opened its 2010-11 Arts@Averett Series with a reception and performance on Aug. 31 to recognize and thank donors who support all of the arts programs.

The performance featured vocalist Jennifer Kirkland and guitarist Bert Carlson, better known as Kirkland and Carlson. The duo performed an eclectic mix of jazz, blues and other American popular music.

"It was a great jazz performance," said senior Matt Westmoreland. "I have a passion for the guitar and Bert Carlson really brought the instrument to life." Westmoreland, a criminal justice/sociology major, is taking guitar classes at the University. "This event was a great way to meet and mingle with those who support the University."

The event, which was specifically for donors to the arts programs, provided them with an opportunity to meet faculty, students and graduates of the programs. They were also able to meet some of the student leaders at the University.

"We are so appreciative of the support from our alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff that help us continue to provide amazing opportunities for our students and the community," said Joey Wilkerson, director of the University's annual giving programs. "We are looking forward to having more events like this in the future, and not just for arts donors.

"A special thanks to those folks who helped put everything together - Bon Appetit, the Arts@Averett committee and faculty from the fine arts programs."
