It's Ragtime at Averett

Averett Associate Professor of Music Dr. Anne Lewis will perform a piano concert featuring ragtime music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22 in Pritchett Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

Lewis, who is celebrating her 25th academic year at the University, caught ragtime fever as a teenager and was known for playing Joplin rags at the slightest provocation. The history of ragtime and its impact on American popular music has been a continuous thread in every level of her academic studies.

Her concert explores the relationship of Scott Joplin?s "parlor music" with contemporary American and European piano styles for amateur consumption. Joplin, an American composer and pianist, is best known for "The Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer."
