Ready for the Big Time
Former Averett men's soccer standout Samuli Markkanen recently signed with HIFK (Idrottsfreningen Kamraterna i Helsingfors), a First Division team in Finland.
Markkanen, a striker from Helsinki, played two seasons for the Cougars from 2008-2009 under Head Coach Ed Goodhines. Markkanen was a 2009 USA South All-Conference First Team selection and was named to the 2009 USA South Conference All-Tournament Team. He finished with 10 career goals and three assists in two seasons at Averett. Markkanen was also selected to the 2008 USA South Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.
The 26-year-old has represented Gnistan since B-juniors, where last season he scored seven goals for IF Gnistan in Second Division. He also has played for PK 35.
"I believe that we have got a good squad size and I will try to bring myself to my share," Markkanen said in a release. "HIFK is a traditional club and it's great to play in front of a large fan base."
HIFK has won seven Finnish championships, seven silver medals and four bronze medals. The club has made two European Cup appearances and one UEFA Cup appearance.
