Flatpicking, Toe-Tappin' Music

Dust off your clogging and flatfooting shoes. Grammy award winner and Danville native Tony Rice will be performing with the Tony Rice Unit in Pritchett Auditorium April 1 at 7:30 p.m. This concert is made possible thanks to a partnership with Danville Community College.

Rice, who was born in Danville, but grew up in Los Angeles, is considered one of the most innovative acoustic guitar players in bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, newgrass and acoustic jazz. He has performed with J.D. Crowe and the New South, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Ricky Skaggs and his brothers Larry, Wyatt and Ronnie.

While Rice is no longer able to sing due to dysphonia, a voice disorder, his guitar more than makes up for his lack of vocals.

He won a Grammy in 1983 for Best Country Instrumental Performance and was the recipient of numerous International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards, most recently in 2007 for Instrumental Performer of the Year for guitar.
