New Academic Year Opens
Averett will officially open its 153rd academic session with Opening Convocation at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 in Pritchett Auditorium. President Tiffany Franks will deliver the opening address.

Quantico Holds Graduation Celebration
A graduation celebration, which recognized Averett graduates, was held in July at the Lifelong Learning Center at Quantico Marine Corps Base.

Randell Fultman, institutional research analyst, has joined us from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). While at UTD he served as intern and student worker in the office of student success and assessment. He graduated magna cum laude from UTD with a bachelor's degree in public affairs and a master's degree in public policy in December 2010. Welcome, Randall!
Changing Positions
AU is on the move and so is Matt Nidiffer! Matt joined the registrar's office on July 15 as the new GI bill specialist. He will be moving with the registrar's office to their new location on the first floor of Main as a part of the new AU Central! When you see Matt, please congratulate him on his new position!

Averett Staff Serve in the Community
When the local United Way held their Day of Reading on June 21, Averett staff members Debbie Flinn, director of development; Dan Hayes, alumni director; and Dana Mehalko, academic advisor for Adult Professional, were numbered among the more than 60 volunteers who read to area preschools and daycare centers. In addition to being read to, the children also received their own book, parent activity cards and a library book bag to continue their reading journey.

Flinn Appointed to Serve on Policy Board
Debbie Flinn, director of development, was appointed by Danville City Council to serve as the city's representative on the Dan River Alcohol Safety Action Program Policy Board. Congratulations, Debbie!

Nothing but Blue Skies and Smooth Flying
In July, during the Summer Series of Something for staff development, staff members had the opportunity to visit the Aviation Center. During their tour, they met current students, learned what alumni are doing, toured the planes and had the chance to fly in the new flight simulator.
