coffeebreakTournament Honoring Professor Emeritus
The Danville Speech and Hearing Center's annual golf tournament now honors one of Averett's own - Dr. Betty Heard, professor emeritus of English. The Greenberg/Overcash/Heard Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Friday, June 7 at Caswell Pines Golf Club.

Heard was an active supporter of the Speech and Hearing Center, serving as a member of the board, as treasurer and helping with the golf tournament.

Anyone interested in supporting or participating in the tournament can call the Danville Speech and Hearing Center at 793-8255.

Just a reminder the next University-wide staff meeting will be Thursday, April 18 at 11:15 a.m. in the multipurpose room of the Student Center. Please mark your calendars.

The minutes from the staff meeting have migrated to the Intranet. If you haven't located them already, here are step-by-step directions on how to find them:

coffeebreakLearn Best Practices for Teaching Online
Are you interested in teaching online? Participate in Best Practices for Facilitating Online Courses, a three-week, asynchronous online seminar facilitated via Moodle by Instructional Technologist Kim McMurtry. Participants learn best practices for teaching online, including applying the theory of andragogy to online teaching strategies, exploring online learning theories and student-centered teaching and enhancing student engagement. Not only does this seminar give you a great foundation for effective online teaching, but it also gives you the opportunity to experience an online course from the student's perspective.

On Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. our student organizations are hosting our second annual club carnival on the lawn of the Student Center.

Puppypalooza is back by popular demand on Thursday, April 11 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Student Center lawn. The Danville Area Humane Society is bringing the puppies. Playing with, and petting a puppy, is a great way to release stress. And with exams right around the corner, what better to let go of some of that tension?

The Southside Virginia Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is hosting the Administrative Professionals' Day Luncheon on Wednesday, April 24 from 11 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Stratford Courtyard Conference Center. The luncheon costs $25 and Charles Majors, chairman of American National Bankshares, Inc. and chairman of American National Bank and Trust Company will be the guest speaker.

After participating in a city-wide day of community service last semester our students wanted to do it again. This semester The Day to Engage is Thursday, April 11 (tomorrow). Students can review a list of community partners, ask questions, and sign up by visiting the Success Center or going to A picnic will be held from 5-8 p.m. on the lawn outside the Student Center at the end of the day to celebrate.
