coffeebreakASIST Suicide Prevention Training
The Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Health, will host the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Program (ASIST) at Averett on May 8 and 9.

ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help people recognize risk for suicide, intervene to prevent immediate harm and link "at-risk" people to appropriate levels of care. ASIST is considered suicide prevention "first aid," and is used on university campuses by counselors, case managers, campus security, residence hall directors, campus ministry and all those (including faculty) who provide direct service to others within the campus community.

Due to the support of the Virginia Department of Health's Division of Injury and Violence Prevention, this training is being offered at Averett at no cost to participants. If you would like to register for the ASIST training, you may do so by clicking here. If you have questions about this training, please contact Joan Kahwajy-Anderson at extension 15624 or at

coffeebreakUse Moodle to Enhance Face-to-Face Courses
Faculty, have you started using Moodle to support your face-to-face traditional courses yet? If not, explore the possibilities of leveraging our learning management system to enhance teaching and learning:
• Eliminate paper handouts completely by providing your syllabus and learning materials online.
• Extend class discussion and get students writing by using an online discussion forum as a homework assignment.
• Have students submit their assignments electronically and grade them online using a rubric.

Begin by registering for hands-on Moodle workshops. During the two weeks following Commencement, workshops are offered on the Main Campus in Moodle Basics, Gradebook (which includes setting up an assignment), Activities (with a focus on Chat and Forum), Rubrics and Quizzes. See the workshop schedule and register today by clicking here.

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Christopher Robinson who is a BBA student. He hopes to graduate from the program December 2015.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
My main motivation for obtaining my degree is to better myself and obtain the knowledge and tools needed to advance within my company.

What do you like most about your degree program?
I really enjoy the group structure and the amount of knowledge that we achieve in such a short period of time. You get a lot accomplished and the professors really make sure you understand what you have learned.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
One tip that I would offer to other AU classmates is to always communicate with those who are in your groups. Communication is key to making sure you complete all of your group work in the time allocated and your overall performance in that particular class.

Jessie Hayes Qualifies for National Competition
On Saturday, April 6, Hailey Brown and Jessie Hayes traveled with Cricket Morris, coach of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team, to the Zone 5 championship show in Brooklet, Ga. Both riders qualified for the Zone championship by finishing first or second in the Regional Championship held the previous weekend at Virginia Tech.

Hailey competed in the Intermediate Over Fences class and received a strong sixth place finish. Jessie competed in the Novice on the Flat class and finished second, qualifying her for the National Championship show. Jessie and Cricket will travel to the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, Pa. for the National Championships the first week of May.

The IHSA competition is unique in that the riders do not take their own horses to each show, but instead compete on unfamiliar horses that are owned by the host. Jessie and Hailey have both qualified for Zone finals before, always finishing in the top six riders in their division. Zone 5 consists of 59 colleges from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Alabama. More than 500 riders compete in shows in this zone throughout the year trying to qualify for one of two spots at the National Championship competition.
