coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
The Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program has a Student Spotlight program. Each month, the academic advisors pick a student from each campus and have the student answer a few questions about his or her experience here at Averett.

Meet Shannon Deristel who is enrolled in the MBA program. Shannon anticipates graduating in December.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
Obtaining my MBA has been one of my goal's for as long as I can remember. Not only will it enhance my career and job opportunities, but it's also important because of my background. Almost two years ago now when I started here at Averett, we were asked to create bumper stickers. My bumper sticker read, "I will because I can!" My parents, along with my grandparents, drilled into me constantly the need for an education. My grandmothers, one a mid-wife and the other a maid, weren't allowed the same opportunities to do all that I've had. To not accept the challenges and improve both my quality of life and that of my family would be a disservice to all the sacrifices they made for me. I'm motivated to continue because I know that it would make all of them proud.

What do you most like about your degree program?
I like the fact that these are people who know me! We all started together, struggle together and lean on each other for support. Some of them will be in my life forever. These are friendships forged because of circumstance, but lasting because of commonality!

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students? Keep going no matter how tough you think it is! Life gets in the way sometimes, but you can do it! Persevere!

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Telly Simons, an MBA student. Telly plans to graduate next May.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
To be in a better position for promotion and to set the standard for my daughters to follow.

What do you most like about your degree program?
I really like the group concept and staying with the same classmates throughout the duration of the program. Having that extra push from your fellow classmates serves as a great motivational tool.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Just know that it will get hard at some point and you may want to quit. But hang in there because this is a feeling we all have had at one point or another. Remember your ultimate goal is to graduate!
