coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
The Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program has a Student Spotlight program. Each month, the academic advisors pick a student from each campus and have the student answer a few questions about his or her experience here at Averett.

Meet Sonia Elliott, a BBA student. Sonia will graduate in December.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
I wanted to go back to college to finish what I had started so many years ago…a bachelor's degree! I also wanted to understand the business end of my husband's retail business and Averett was there to guide me along the way.

What do you most like about your degree program?
I love the ability to attend class in the evening. I also like the fact my schedule was set from the day I started and I could see my graduation date in black and white. It has been a great motivator!

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Do not procrastinate!

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Charles Walcott, one of our MBA students. Charles anticipates graduating Aug. 4, 2014.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
I am pursuing an MBA degree for a few reasons. First, I want to be more competitive and I feel that this particular degree will give me the necessary skills in today's highly selective job market. Second, one of my professional goals is to earn an MBA. In addition, I wanted to earn an MBA because it offers practical skills I can use in my current profession. Lastly, if I ever make a career change, I can transfer what I learn in the MBA program to any field.

What do you most like about your degree program?
Averett's MBA program offers several advantages. I was interested in taking classes in a classroom setting with a professor and other students rather than online classes. Working closely with my cohort on assignments is both challenging and rewarding. I find working in a team format is very similar to how organizations operate and professionals must learn to perform successfully in a team environment. Also, the schedule is flexible enough to allow me to work full-time and spend time with my family while taking classes.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
One tip I would like to share with my fellow classmates and future Averett students is try to focus on one small goal at a time rather than worrying about the overall goal. For example, complete each assignment to the best of your ability without worrying about how to make it through the entire program. Eventually, as you are successful with each assignment and class, you will complete the program by achieving each small goal.
