coffeebreakStaff Members Complete CERT Training
A dozen members of the Averett staff completed the Campus CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training on June 5. The training was led by Al Smith, the CERT outreach coordinator for the city of Danville. During the 24 hours of training over three weeks, the participants learned about a variety of topics relating to emergency response protocols. The last class was a live simulation exercise in which the members of the training class were able to put the information they learned into practice.

This was the first training session of this kind to be offered on campus. Plans are being made to offer this training in the fall semester to others. Once the dates have been set, notices will go out to all faculty and staff with information on how to register.

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
The Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program has a Student Spotlight program. Each month, the academic advisors pick a student from each campus and have the student answer a few questions about his or her experience here at Averett.

Meet Zena Smith a BBA student who will graduate this year.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
My youngest daughter will be graduating from high school in 2014. I want her to see that attending college is challenging, but she can do it as long as she commits to her goals and does not quit!

What do you most like about your degree program?
I enjoy Averett's GPS program because it's accelerated, which helps me achieve my goals in a timely manner since I am a working mom and wife.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
When you get close to graduating, with only a few classes left, do not quit; remember why you started your journey!

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Holli McConnell, an MBA student. Holli will finish her last class on June 26.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree from Averett?
I am fulfilling a promise that I made to myself when I completed my undergraduate degree. Knowing how proud my two little girls will be is what keeps me going.

What do you most like about your degree program?
I like that we are able to concentrate on a single course at a time, and that the courses are designed so that they build on one another.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Remember to find time for you. You cannot sustain a life that's all work and school. It's okay to spend a weekend (once in a while) without opening your books.
