coffeebreakSummer Series of Something
The second event in our annual Summer Series of Something is this Thursday, July 18, at 10 a.m. in the multipurpose room. This week's presentation - "Why 'Biblical Israel' was not Unique" - will be presented by Dr. John Laughlin, professor emeritus of religion (1979-2011).

The Summer Series seminars are open to all University faculty and staff. Join your coworkers and colleagues to learn more about the work of our faculty who will explore biblical history with us and offer us an opportunity for developing our wellness philosophy.

Light refreshments will be served at all programs.

coffeebreakMoodle Topics Workshops Offered
Would you like some guided training in a particular Moodle topic? A variety of one-hour hands-on workshops are offered on the Main Campus in July and August that focus on specific aspects of Moodle, including gradebook, assignments, forums, quizzes and rubrics. It's a great opportunity to spend some time developing your courses for the fall semester. Moodle basics workshops are also available for those new to Moodle. See the workshop schedule and register here. If you have a conflict and would like a workshop scheduled at a different time, just email Kim McMurtry.

coffeebreakSign Up for an Inaugural Lecture Series
Join us for the inaugural lecture in a new annual series exploring issues of faith and spirituality. This year's speaker will be Gabe Lyons, who will talk about his book, "The Next Christians." Lyons will present a series of three lectures on Sept. 26 and 27 at West Main Baptist Church.

Averett will cover the cost of attendance for a limited number of faculty and staff. If you are interested in attending, email Wanda Haynes to register.

Please contact Ralph Hawkins or Alexis Ehrhardt with any questions.

coffeebreakMcMurtry Article Published
The spring 2013 issue of "The Journal of Applied Learning Technology" features an article by Kim McMurtry, instructional technologist. The article, which is entitled "Designing Online Training for Faculty New to Online Teaching," explains the design of an online training seminar in best practices for facilitating online courses based on the constructivist instructional design model of Morrison, Ross, Kalman and Kemp.

coffeebreakTime to Say Farewell
Back in May, we had to say goodbye to Dr. Stuart Jones. Now, we must say goodbye to his wife, Terri, as she leaves the AU family to join Stuart in Indiana. Please join us on Monday, July 22 from 3-4 p.m. in the break room on Main Hall's first floor (down the hall from Averett Central) to wish her well.

coffeebreakThank You
My family and I would like to thank you all for the beautiful cards, emails, phone calls, flowers and most importantly your prayers during the recent loss of my Dad. The outpouring of support and the blessings from prayers have helped us so very much. Please continue to remember us in your prayers that God's comfort will continue to embrace us.

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
The Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program has a Student Spotlight program. Each month, the academic advisors pick a student from each campus and have the student answer a few questions about his or her experience here at Averett.

Meet Jeanine Marchese, a BBA student who will graduate in 2017.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree with AU?
My motivation for obtaining my degree with AU is to remain employable in today's changing market and to continue my personal journey of learning something new each and every day.

What do you most like about your degree program?
I love it that everyone, the people in the financial office, the advisor (Yea, Erma!) and the professors are so enthusiastic and helpful. They make going back to school easy and fun.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Ask about alternate ways off the base at Quantico after 10 p.m.!

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Willie Fobbs, an MBA student who expects to complete the GPS Program in the fall of 2014.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree with AU?
I've always wanted to pursue a master's degree, but never felt the time was right given family and work obligations. I now have three adult children who are making their way in the world and felt like the time was right. I have a great job right now and feel that pursuing my master's degree will broaden my knowledge and experiences in my current position, as well as expand my opportunities should I decide to begin a 'second career.' In addition, I hope to be a beacon of light and inspiration for my three kids to show them that anything is possible and you never stop learning.

What do you most like about your degree program?
The Averett program provides a flexible, learning environment to pursue my studies at my own pace, and the program focuses on real-world issues in the business and government environment.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
The program is yours to mold. The professors have been engaging and easy to work with so far, and they give you an opportunity to adapt the program's requirements to your learning style.
