coffeebreakSchedule of Opening Events
On Thursday, Aug. 15, the University will open the 2013-14 academic year with a continental breakfast and opening meeting. The continental breakfast will be served from 7:30-8 a.m. in the breezeway outside Blount Chapel. The opening meeting will be held in Blount at 8 a.m. During this opening meeting, those who are new to the University will be officially welcomed and pinned. If you are new, please sit toward the front of the chapel.

Directly following the University wide meeting, the faculty will hold their opening meeting at 9:15 in Blount Chapel. Staff will hold their opening meeting at 11:15 in the multipurpose room of the Student Center. A free lunch will be provided for both faculty and staff at noon.

At the end of the day, make plans to join Dr. Franks and her husband, Joe, at their home for the Averett Family Opening Celebration. Invitations were emailed earlier this week. Make sure you check your junk mailbox in case the invite was diverted there.

Directors, chairs and VPs, please encourage new people in your areas to attend all of our opening activities.

coffeebreakNew Program for Work Orders
Aramark is pleased to announce that it will begin using a new program for work orders as of Thursday, Aug. 1. The new program - TMA - will send automated information to the person who placed the work order regarding the time the order was received and processed as well as when the request should be completed.

To access the new work order form, please click here. Remember to bookmark this site so you can find it easily later.

coffeebreakLooking for a Few Volunteers
On Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day) the office of student engagement is taking students to Wet n' Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park in Greensboro for the day. If you are interested in driving the van for this trip and getting a free ticket into the park, please email Lesley Villarose at lvillarose@averett.edu.

coffeebreakOnline Course Development Training Offered
Have you considered developing a course for online delivery? Wonder how to get started? Participate in "Effective Online Course Development," a two-week asynchronous online seminar facilitated by Kim McMurtry via Moodle.

The seminar has no scheduled meeting times, just like an online course, and time commitment is expected to be about three hours each week. You will engage with your peers in learning effective strategies for developing an online course, including designing learning objectives to support course outcomes as well as instructional strategies and assessments, and you'll get a jumpstart on developing your course. See the schedule to register; the next seminar begins August 26.

coffeebreakReminder: Sign Up for Lecture Series
Faculty and staff, you are invited to join us for a lecture series exploring issues of faith and spirituality. Author Gabe Lyons will talk about his book, "The Next Christians," during a series of three lectures - Sept. 26 at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. at West Main Baptist Church.

Averett will cover the cost of attendance for a limited number of faculty and staff. If you are interested in attending, email Wanda Haynes to register.

Please contact Ralph Hawkins or Alexis Ehrhardt with any questions.

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
The Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program has a Student Spotlight program. Each month, the academic advisors pick a student from each campus and have the student answer a few questions about his or her experience here at Averett.

Meet Mandy Owens, a BBA student who anticipates graduating in April 2014.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree with AU?
My initial motivation for completing my degree was for career and advancement opportunities at work. Now, in addition to "opening doors," I am extremely motivated by knowing my son will see that both his mom and dad have completed their degrees and hope this will help encourage him to pursue his degree (many years down the road)!

When I started the program (before having a child), I had a vision of looking out into the crowd, seeing my child sitting on my husband's lap and clapping for mommy as I walked across the stage! That vision is now a reality....that keeps me motivated!

What do you most like about your degree program?
The best part about the GPS Program is that it is truly geared toward working adults. Sometimes work-life and/or family-life can make it very difficult to stay motivated, but the way Averett's program is designed, helps me stick with it.

The study team format is very helpful as "many heads are better than one" - especially in statistics and economics! I also really enjoy how the classroom atmosphere is more about discussions versus lectures and often times adult students can relate to each other better.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Stick with it - it flies by!! Each class is just a few weeks and one class down gets you one step closer to reaching your goal!

coffeebreakAU Student Spotlight
Meet Keith Norris, who is a BBA student. He looks forward to graduating in December.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree with AU?
My motivation for obtaining my degree is the idea of completing what I start no matter what obstacles life may throw my way.

What do you most like about your degree program?
Averett's GPS Program allows for interaction and team building among fellow classmates, along with the convenience of one night per week, five week courses.

What advice do you have for your fellow classmates and future AU students?
Do not ever quit or give up what you start, although the end may seem distant, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
