announcements

coffeebreakTornado Drill
The University will be participating in the statewide tornado drill at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 11. We are aware this is during spring break. This provides an opportunity for faculty and staff who are on campus to review our shelter procedures. Stay tuned for more information.

coffeebreakEmergency Response Training
The dates have been set for the spring sessions of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training - March 18 and 25; April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; May 6 and 13. All sessions will be held from 2-4:30 p.m. At the conclusion of this training, participants will have gained skills to help them assess and respond to an emergency situation. Participants of the training will not only be more prepared to assist the University and Danville communities in the event of a natural or other disaster, but also their families and neighbors.

Participants must commit to all nine dates because the final session is a simulation activity that brings into play all of the skills and information from the previous sessions. If you are interested in taking part in this essential piece of the university's emergency response efforts, please contact Bill Woodward no later than March 11 to reserve your spot.

coffeebreakStudent Leadership Awards

coffeebreakHoffman Published in Magazine
Dr. David Hoffman, professor of English/journalism, has an article in this month's Blue Ridge Country magazine. The two-page article is titled "Sadie: The Bird, Bug and (Mostly) Baseball Dog." The article is about Sadie's ability to sniff and track down baseballs at Dan Daniel Park and along the Riverwalk Trail. This past year, from June 1 to mid-November, Sadie found 89 baseballs. coffeebreakReaching out to the Community
Assistant Professor of Art Lee Sandstead has always been an advocate for reaching out to the community. From 2009-2011, Lee hosted up to 18 members of the community in his art-history classes. Called the "OWLS" (Older, Wiser, Learners), these students went through the entire art-history series of five classes.

Now, Lee is partnering with the Danville Recreation Department, he will be giving six art-history classes to the community at the Ballou Park Recreation Center.

"This has been a great opportunity for me," said Lee. "Not only do I get to reach out to the community, but I get to see many familiar faces."

His first talk was Thursday, Feb. 27, and he will be giving five more throughout the year. For more information, please contact Lee at lee@sandstead.com.
