From the Dean's Desk
As another fall semester comes to a close and the students are preparing for their final papers, presentations, and exams, I find myself amazed at the individuals who make up the Averett community. New students stepping up right away to take on leadership roles in student government and other clubs and organizations; returning students growing into respected leaders in the classrooms and labs, and on the field, court, or stage; faculty, staff, and coaches challenging students to give back to the Danville and Averett communities. Yes, we are a small university, but the impact of our members can be felt in big ways. In addition to the helpful information about upcoming deadlines, you'll also find in this edition of the newsletter stories about the successes of our community. As you read them, know that all of these things are possible because of the efforts of many dedicated individuals who are passionate about the great things the members of the Averett community are doing because they care about our students, our campus, and the city we call home.

RESIDENCE HALL HAPPENINGS
The residence halls of Averett University will close for Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday, November 22, at 7PM. All students should make arrangements to be out of their rooms by that time.
The halls will open for students to return on Sunday, November 27, at 10:00am
Students are expected to move out of their residence hall 24 hours after their last final exam or by 7:00pm on Wednesday, December 7. Seniors who are graduating on December 10 have until 7:00pm that evening to check out of their residence hall room.
Residence Halls will open on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at 10:00am for returning students.
Random Acts of Kindness
During their training in August, the students on the Resident Advisor staff were presented a challenge of giving back to the Danville community through Random Acts of Kindness. What started as a one day activity during their training has turned into a monthly event among the staff. Word of their acts of kindness gained attention from the local media, and others on campus have joined in to perform random acts of kindness on the selected days and throughout the month. Registrar's Office Information and Updates
Registration for Spring 2012
Students should have already met with their advisors and registered for classes for the spring 2012 semester. Students still have time to adjust their schedules, as registration continues now through January 17, 2012, which is the last day to Add/Drop and Declare Pass/Fail.
For students finishing their degree requirements for December graduation, they must be completed and grades submitted by faculty by December 8, 2011
December graduates are encouraged to attend the graduation rehearsal on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Grant Center. The Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2011, starting at 10:30am. Graduates should be in line by 9:30am.
Other Accolades and Acknowledgements
The Equestrian Dept. and Art Professor, Mr. Marsh helped decorate a float for the DAV for the annual Danville Veteran's Day Parade.
Averett University has been named a Military Friendly School for 2011. This is the second year in a row the university has received this distinction.
Student Financial Services
Statements will be mailed a few weeks prior to the payment deadline for each semester. You will receive one paper statement per semester. All future billing statements are posted on the students' myAverett Self-service account. Tuition and fees are due and payable prior to the beginning of each semester; spring semester payment is due by January 6, 2012. Failure to pay current semester charges may cause the student's class registration to be cancelled. Do not ignore the student billing statements just because you think financial aid will cover the balance.

Important FAFSA Reminder!
The Financial Aid Office wants to remind students that the FAFSA is a FREE application to apply for federal and state aid (grants & loans). The correct website to apply for aid is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Some students have applied at incorrect websites and have paid third party servicers to complete their FAFSA. The FAFSA renewal process begins January 1, 2012. Averett University's school code is 003702. If you have any questions about applying for financial aid, please contact student financial services at email@example.com or 434-791-5614.
Student Athletes Give Back to the Danville Community
On Halloween night Averett Student-Athletes went door to door, not asking for candy, but asking for cans. The teams took part in the SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) sponsored "Canoween" festivities. The effort was part of the USA South Conference's "Cans Across the Conference" food drive.
In one night, the Men's Basketball team collected over 170 cans, which turned out to be the most of any Averett team. As a school, Averett students brought in nearly 500 cans which will all be donated to benefit a local charity.
This Fall members of the Averett University Men's basketball team traded in their sneakers and jerseys for hardhats, rakes, wheelbarrows and work gloves as they joined forces with Habitat for Humanity, giving back to the Danville community. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit ministry that builds quality affordable homes for those in need. The organization has built over 400,000 homes, sheltering over 2 million people around the world.
"It's a great way for our program to give back to our community and to help a family here in Danville." said Head Coach Matt Parke. "I thought our guys did a great job working together and really working hard. I was proud of them for generously donating their Saturday morning, doing work for a good cause."
The house the team worked on is a part of the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative located on Lee Street in downtown Danville. The team helped prepare and seed the yard, installed insulation, and moisture controlled the crawlspace.
Student Government Association Update
The focus of the Student Government Association this semester has been providing community forums at which invited speakers discussed their areas and took the opportunity to hear feedback from the students in attendance. Speakers this semester were:
- President Tiffany Franks who spoke with students about the changes and enhancements to campus that took place over the summer
- Chef Terry McGhee from Bon Appetit, the campus food service provider who spoke about the process for developing menus for the dining hall. He also addressed Bon Appetit's corporate commitment to purchasing locally whenever possible.
- Alonzo Jones, director of facilities, and his staff presented on their approach to campus maintenance, housekeeping, and security. In addition to taking questions from the students, the staff members asked questions of the students regarding ways they can enhance the service they are providing on campus.
- Dr. Gary Tucker, Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics, and Jamie Williford, University Chaplain, presented on the university's efforts to reestablish our relationship with the Baptist General Assembly of Virginia.

The forums will continue in the spring with presentations about Information Technology, campus housing sign-up processes, and changes in the general education requirements. Please encourage your student to attend these sessions or to suggest possible topics.

Notes from the Alumni Office
Why is the alumni office in here? The alumni office is in this newsletter to ask you to help your student understand the importance of watching for alumni events to which they are invited throughout the year.
Alumni want to help students:
One of the ways that alumni contribute back to the University is by being a part of events on campus. Students from all class years can benefit from hearing about their profession. Hearing from people in the work-force gives students a chance to build upon the visiting alumni experience. In addition to learning how to better market themselves, students can begin to network with professionals in the field. Networking can help more than with a job search. Networking can help students find a better place to live, get in with the better doctor, membership at a club, or a better price on a car. It is difficult to stress just how important networking is, and it is a skill that needs to be practiced.
There are several events for seniors in conjunction with the Career Services office. Whenever a student sees that a professional in their field is visiting, it is worthwhile to visit and carry a resume with them. While it can be rude to hand a resume to a guest on campus, it is smart to have it if they ask for it.
Alumni office hosts Senior Dinner
Seniors should make plans to attend the Senior Dinner on February 1. This will be a special dinner in their honor. The dinner will also be a celebration of the final run to graduation - only 87 days to Graduation! We do not do a Senior Dinner in the fall, so any student graduating in 2012 - April or December - is invited to attend.
The Business of Spring: A Message from the Galesi Family Student Success Center
The semester is wrapping up quickly! Please help us ensure that your son or daughter has taken care of the important business associated with his or her enrollment at Averett.
If your student is returning to Averett University for the spring, please make sure that he or she has registered for classes. If your son or daughter has not registered, then it is very important that he or she meets with his or her academic advisor immediately. It can't be stressed enough how important it is that students register before the end of the semester. Registering now will ensure they will get the classes they need or want. New freshmen and transfer students will be enrolling for spring classes in January, so returning students should not delay and register now for the spring!
If your student is planning to withdraw or taking a leave of absence from the University, it is very important that he or she follow the Averett leave/withdrawal procedure. Students should start the process by making an appointment with Dr. Mary Vanderlinden by e-mailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org, or calling 434-791-5754. Students may also stop by her office located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center (office No. 111).
