Danville Major Sherman Saunders holds up some letters he recently found that were written by his mother to his father while she was in jail.  She had been arrested during one of the Civil Rights protests in Danville in the '60s.  Saunders spoke as part of the University's second annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day breakfast on Jan. 16.

FEBRUARY 2012

One month into 2012 and there are already exciting developments from Averett to report, including:  Colleges of Distinction recently listed Averett among only 10 other colleges and universities in Virginia for 2012, which you can read more about in the story below.

The E. Stuart James Grant Charitable Trust has generously awarded $500,000 to Averett in support of nursing education.  This brings total gifts for the University's expansion in the health sciences to more than $2.6 million!

During the University's annual Founders' Day Convocation, a restored partnership with the Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund was made official through a covenant signing.  Keesee will provide $200,000 in scholarships for Averett students beginning fall 2012.  This new scholarship money will allow the University to help students pursue their dream of an Averett education each year.

The new year is off to a wonderful start at Averett and we look forward to sharing more exciting news with you in the months to come.  As always, feel free to visit us and see some of the things we are doing firsthand.
