On June 23-24, Averett held its first new student orientation session, welcoming more than 100 incoming freshmen and their families to campus. Students spent time learning about what life will be like as a Cougar, got to know other new Cougars and conducted business to prepare them for their arrival in August.
Is it hot enough for you? As we approach mid-summer, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of August and the return to the hustle and bustle of a new academic year, especially as we are on track to welcome another record freshmen class for the third year in a row. It’s such an energizing time to be a part of your Hometown University!
I’m pleased to share that Averett University has recently been recognized by Noel-Levitz, a higher education consulting firm, to receive the 2012 Marketing-Recruitment Excellence Award (MREA). The MREA is a national award that recognizes a college or university for its enrollment and retention efforts. Since 2008, we have seen an 18 percent increase in new student enrollment, our first to second year retention has also increased by 18 percent and our traditional undergraduate enrollment has increased by 14 percent. This award is a testimony to the dedication and focused work of the entire Averett community and to all of the alumni, friends, foundations and benefactors who provide the support that helps to make our progress possible.
July promises to be an active and meaningful month as Averett hosts 900 Baptist middle and high school youth over a three-week period as part of PASSPORT, youth camp with a mission. These promising young people will be in our neighborhoods, participating in various service projects to make a difference in our community. We’re so pleased we have the opportunity to introduce these young people to what a great city Danville is, and to our wonderful University. We are committed to preparing students to serve and lead as catalysts for positive change, and know that serving others is the best way to experience true leadership.
Along with welcoming those from PASSPORT, we will be hosting two orientations this month — a transfer orientation July 13 and a second new student orientation July 14-15. Last month we hosted more than 100 students and their families from as far away as New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania for our first new student orientation session.
With gratitude and best wishes for these remaining days of summer,
P.S. Please forward this to others who might enjoy this newsletter, or have friends fill out our online form to be added to our mailing list.
I welcome your comments and questions.
