This time of year marks new beginnings at Averett University. We have begun our 152nd academic year and it is an exciting one of growth and recognition.On August 20 we celebrated the opening of The Schoolfield House Booksellers at Averett University.Many of you were able to join us for that celebration.I also want to invite you to share in our thanks to the donor who in large part enabled this wonderful addition to our community.While the donor has asked to remain anonymous, we are collecting expressions of gratitude in a scrapbook.
Your Hometown University welcomed a record class of new students this year, and we received national recognition.Our 340 new students come from the Commonwealth and 16 other states and the District of Columbia, and from 15 other countries.U.S. News & World Report ranked Averett as a top Regional College in their 2011 Best Colleges guide, on newsstands this month.I also am pleased to share that we were recognized as a Military-Friendly School for 2011 by G.I. Jobs magazine.These are indeed exciting times to be a member of the Averett family!

Fall Athletic Season Off to a Running Start
Several of Averett's athletic teams held their fall openers this past weekend. The volleyball team hosted their annual 16th Annual Cougars Classic - winning two of their four matches. In their home opener, the football team rebounded after being down at the half against Hampden-Sydney. The team ended up losing 45-30. The men's soccer team won two games in the Guilford Classic over the weekend. The women's soccer team opened their season 2-0 and hosts their home opener at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
