Averett recently formed a partnership with the Danville Public Schools to work with rising ninth grade students for four years to increase their involvement in the learning process both in and out of the classroom. The Shining Stars program came about thanks to a grant from the Womack Foundation. From July 18-28 the participating students stayed on Averett's campus where they took classes in study skills, learning and technology and participated in a STEM project.During the school year they will participate in on-campus activities monthly until they graduate from high school.

The arrival of August means that a new school year is just around the corner at Averett University! We're preparing for another exciting and action-packed academic year.August is a month of beginnings and events that will live in the memory of our approximately 350 new students and their parents who will join us this week. Our supportive local community plays an important role in those memories, and I invite each of you to taste the excitement of these new beginnings at your Hometown University.

We're looking forward to a busy fall, as we open Averett Central and begin classes at our Riverview Campus.I want to draw your attention to several upcoming events specifically: our opening athletics events - Volleyball and Women's Soccer on Sept. 1, Football on Sept. 10, and Men's Soccer on Sept. 14; our first Arts@Averett event - Dr. Melanie Watkins on Sept. 6, as part of our Authors on Campus series; and the Averett Hometown Homecoming event on Sept. 30.Finally, students tell me how much it means to feel welcomed back to our area by the community. If you would be willing to display an Averett pennant, banner or sign, we can help. You can reach us at 791-5684 or email:
