President Emeritus Dr. Frank Campbell is congratulated at mid-field by Athletic Director Sam Ferguson and Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks during halftime of the Homecoming football game Oct. 1. Campbell was inducted into the Cougar Club Sports Hall of Fame earlier that day during a special breakfast. Campbell was instrumental in growing the athletics program at Averett, adding three new sports teams to the program during his tenure - women's soccer, baseball and football.

Homecoming 2011 at your Hometown University featured crisp fall weather and more than 400 returning alumni, family and friends mingling with each other and our students at events on and off campus.Our Hometown Homecoming party featured live music and great food at Danville's historic Community Market.We celebrated 100 years of Main Hall with a full schedule of hard-contested fall sports events and many more activities.Mark your calendars now: Homecoming 2012 is scheduled for October 19-21.As the weather changes, we look forward to our seasonal traditions like the Halloween Trick or Treat Averett hosts for local children and our Averett Celebrates Christmas community event on Nov. 29.

In the meantime, there is plenty happening at Averett and plenty to do.Our expanded health sciences initiative is gaining momentum and continues to receive positive support from the community.Most recently, the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission granted Averett $300,000 toward the simulation labs that will give our health sciences students access to cutting-edge learning technologies.And, speaking of things to do: if your plans for this weekend are still open, please note that on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Pritchett Auditorium will resonate with the sounds of the Spectrum Brass Quintet.Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Brass Quintet Lights up the Stage!
If you're a fan of the classic standards from days gone by, it's possible the title alone makes you start humming the tune.From "Funny Face" to "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" and "Rhapsody in Blue," George Gershwin left an indelible mark on the world of music. Gershwin's tunes are once again brought to life on Oct. 14 when the Spectrum Brass Quintet performs at Averett thanks to a partnership with the Danville Concert Association.  Full Story

People and Scenes from Homecoming 2011
Averett held its Homecoming festivities Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Highlights of the weekend included a 5-0 route of conference rival Christopher Newport University by the women's soccer team Friday afternoon, the Homecoming Hometown Party Friday night along with tailgating followed by the football game on Saturday.Check out some of our favorite pictures from this year.
