You must have a Wireless Ethernet card (802.11b or 802.11g, also
known as WiFi or Airport Card) to use the wireless
network. Wireless networking provides the convenience of being able to connect
just about anywhere in the
To use the wireless network, the wireless adapter must be WPA-Personal enabled. Position your notebook within range of a wireless access point. You should be able to connect at least 100 feet away from a wireless access point, but if you are having trouble there may be interference from people or devices in the area, try moving to a different spot. If you are using a removable wireless card (not built in), insert it before you turn on your computer.
These instructions must be completed while in an area that is covered by the Averett University Wireless Network.
Part 1
To make sure your laptop meets requirements:
1. Update your wireless card drivers. Many wireless network cards, even those in new laptops, require a driver update to work correctly and provide the best wireless network service. Check with you wireless card or laptop manufacturer’s website to check for driver updates.
2. Remove the Ethernet cable if one is plugged into your laptop.

** The following instructions are based on the Window Wireless Management console that is built into Windows XP. Your wireless card may have its own management utility that you will need to use. The guide still contains the information you will need, however, the steps will be different.
Part 2
To configure and enable the wireless network
connection:
1. Click Start, then right-click on My Network Places (in Classic view, right-click on the My Network Places icon on the Desktop). Select Properties from the drop-down list.

2. The Network Connections window will open with a list of connections for your laptop. Under the heading LAN or High-Speed Internet you should see a Wireless Network icon.

3. Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and select View Available Wireless Networks from the drop-down list.

Note: If View Available Wireless Networks does not appear in the list, select Enable from the drop-down list. Then right click on the
Wireless Network Connection icon again and select View Available Wireless
Networks.
4. The Wireless Network Connection window will open. Under the heading “Choose a wireless network”, click AverettSC or AverettSC2. Click the Connect button.

5. In the field provided, enter avstudent as the network key and the confirmation key. Click Connect.

6. After authentication, the wireless network connection icon should now show the connection.

7. Open Internet Explorer and attempt to visit a webpage.
