Title: Student Success Counselor: Tidewater
Department: GPS Student Services

Position Description/Application Process
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for academic/admissions, advisement and advocacy utilizing critical thinking skills to resolve student questions for all new and continuing students throughout their academic program. This position is responsible for serving as the liaison between the student and the University with regard to policies and procedures.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Ability to communicate in a highly professional manner and build strong professional relationships with students. Strong customer service orientation. Ability to implement innovative ideas to proactively solve problems, prioritize workload, work on cross functional teams and use specialized computer applications like Student Information Systems and Customer Relationship Management systems. High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint). Knowledge of factors that affect student retention and persistence. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication. Excellent project management skills, including the ability to track details and manage timelines. Knowledge of "early alert" and academic intervention systems and processes. Experience in higher education, student services, enrollment management, customer service and/or academic advising. Experience with working adult population in online program. Ability to be available during evening hours and some weekends when students are online for class or on campus for residencies. Must be able to spend significant time working at a computer and on the telephone. Travel required to graduation in Danville and to campus locations in Virginia to provide quarterly class visits.

Duties include:

  • • Respond to all student calls/emails within 24 hours through utilization of the student support contact strategy. • Support assigned student caseload through regular classroom visits, regular communication/phone check-in (as designed in the student contact strategy) and quarterly degree audits. • Accurately maintain student records by documenting all student conversations, and processing through the approved student software used by the GPS program. • Serve as first level intervention through consistent monitoring of the weekly student attendance and grade reports as defined by retention contact strategy. • Communicate proactively with students who have taken leave from the program and help them proactively create re-enrollment plans. • Communicate academic and personal support resources to all students through the LMS, directly or through other channels. • Communicate regularly with Accounting and Financial Aid regarding student schedule changes for accuracy and student financial preparedness. • Provide weekly reporting to the Director on caseload status through specific measureable performance expectations regarding activity, retention goals and referral activity. • Work collaboratively with team members to identify and create solutions to enrollment barriers and any issue impacting student graduation. • Create and support initiatives relating to increasing retention and graduation. • Partner with staff and faculty to orient new students into their degree program by assisting with technology knowledge, program information and regular contact with assigned student caseload. • Conducts academic advisement in order to: a.) inform and retain students b.) advise students of admission and degree completion requirements c.) review with students the degree completion options at Averett University and assist students in preparing a degree completion plan d.) provide awareness of the assessment of prior learning process e.) provide general student services information. • Requires complete understanding of all program requirements, available courses, national standardized exams, and other options. • Advise students in the following areas: available services, academic honors, academic opportunities, academic probation and suspension, poor performance, program completion, extensions, concurrent enrollment, and prerequisite course work. • Schedules, coordinates, and disseminates elective and supplemental curriculum information to students. • Conduct direct outreach and assist with administrative and enrollment matters for students as needed, ensuring students have timely and accurate information about important deadlines, policies and processes relevant to their continued enrollment. • Oversee and execute with accuracy all student change-of-status processes (personal information, course withdrawal, program withdrawal, re-entry, etc.) and processes and informs appropriate departments within 2 business days to assure compliance with federal and state regulations. • Coordinate the selection and orientation of class representative for each cluster or class. • Act as liaison between Averett University and students with respect to admissions, degree options, degree requirements, and academic progress. • Ensure appropriate courses are offered and students are being correctly registered. • Coordinates with Enrollment Team in collaboration with monthly new enrollments. • Assist in execution of emergency response procedures • Must be able to lift light boxes.



Work Schedule:
Office Hours are set for 10:00 a.m. - 7 p.m. with some variance. Travel required to graduation in Danville and to campus locations in Virginia to provide quarterly class visits.
