Science

PSC110 (Weather and Climate) has a prerequisite of AV210.  That means this course is only available to students who have a private pilot’s license and have completed AV210.

Students wishing to take BIO204 or BIO205 have three choices: pass BIO101 and BIO103 with grades of “D” or better, pass BIO101 only with a grade of “C” or better, or have permission of the instructor.

Education

Effective this fall, all entering students who intend to major in Education PK-6 will declare a Liberal Studies (non-licensure track).  This change will guide students with correct general education and professional education courses.  When students have been accepted into the licensure program and passed the required exams, they will change their major to Liberal Studies with licensure.  This format will allow to students to stay on track for licensure but will provide them with a “backup” plan.  See the latest online catalog for the fall of ’08 for greater detail.

All incoming education students will be admitted as "liberal studies" majors. When these students are accepted in the Teacher Education Program, their major will be changed to "liberal studies with teacher licensure."

Education majors who are subsequently not admitted to TEP, will remain in the liberal studies major and complete three concentrations (Education plus two others) and have at least 30 upper level hours in order to complete this major.

Education majors in Secondary and PK-12 Education must complete ED406 before they register for ED489.

Directed Teaching/Seminar

The student will enroll in the appropriate directed teaching course during one semester of the student's senior year after having successfully completed the appropriate instruction course and all other professional education requirements with a grade of C or better.  All students must be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program and have passed both Praxis I and II, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment and the Virginia Reading Assessment, if applicable, before they will be placed in directed teaching.  The VRA is required for PK-6 and Reading Specialist certification.

Physical Education and Wellness and Sport Science

There is a new “coaching” concentration for Physical Education majors.  Please consult the chair of the PE department or the Spring 2008 catalog for further information.

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass the “Writing Proficiency Exam” (given once per semester) to be eligible for the required English Literature class and writing intensive courses.

Only courses approved as “Writing Intensive” and “Oral Intensive” by the Curriculum Committee will be accepted for degree completion requirements.  These courses will be listed as “WI” in the title for writing intensive and “O” after the course number for oral intensive courses.

Assessment
A key to the continual improvement of an institution's education is the on-going assessment of its performance.  All students benefit from the gains achieved by appropriate, valid, and systematic assessment.  Therefore, every student is required to participate in periodic assessment procedures.  Absence from a required assessment activity must be approved by the Dean of Arts and Sciences or the Dean of Students.  Failure to comply with this requirement can result in being placed on probationary status.

IDEAL

Traditional students may not register for IDEAL courses without permission from the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Independent Studies

To satisfy federal guidelines that take effect July 1, independent studies must now demonstrate “substantive interaction” between the instructor and the student.  The student and the instructor will determine the dates and/or number of occasions when this interaction will take place and keep a record.  The syllabus must also include the type of work the student will submit.  Forms for independent studies may be obtained in the Registrar’s Office.  Independent Studies requests should be submitted to the department chair who, in turn, will contact the Dean or Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences with the request.

Independent Studies are only granted in cases where the course in question is required for graduation and will not be offered again before the semester of graduation.  Requests for independent studies should be made through the department chair.

Internships

Students must register for and complete internships during the same semester or summer session.   Retroactive registration for an internship for work previously completed will not be permitted.

Grade Changes for Incompletes

Grade changes for incompletes must be submitted to the Registrar by instructors no later than the last class day of the following semester.  That means students should contact the instructor to determine a due date.  All work must be submitted early enough for the instructor to grade it.

There is a $25 late fee for graduation applications submitted after the dates posted on the “Important Dates” calendar on the Registrar’s page.

Writing Profiency Test

The policy requiring that students pass the Writing Prodiciency exam before registering for writing intensive courses has been suspended indefinitely by vote of the faculty.

Students who do not pass the test may still sign up for their required literature and writing intensive courses provided they meet all of the pre-requisites for those courses. However, students must still pass the WPT in order to graduate.

Interdisciplinary Studies

A new Interdisciplinary Studies major has been approved to replace the former Liberal Studies major.  Fewer upper level hours are required and the student will complete a capstone research project for two credit hours during the senior year.  See the latest online catalog for the fall of ’08 for greater detail.
