Founders' Day Celebration Jan. 19

January 10, 2012

Averett will celebrate Founders' Day Jan. 19 at 11:15 a.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. Founders' Day is a day of celebration and recognition. This is also the time that the University recognizes faculty and staff for their years of service. The Rev. John Upton Jr. will be this year's featured speaker.

Upton, who is a 1974 graduate of Averett, is executive director of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and Virginia Baptist Mission Board. He is also president of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). As president of the BWA, he travels all over the world representing more than 41 million Baptists and talking about the love of Christ. Previously, he was pastor at Urbanna Baptist Church in Urbanna. Upton also served as a missionary in Taiwan with his wife from 1986-91.

The University's first Founders' Day celebration was held on March 17, 1987. Former provost Dr. Malcom Huckabee delivered the address that day.
