Averett Student Group to Host City Council Candidate Debate

March 30, 2012

The Averett Student Community Engagement League (ASCEL) is hosting a Danville City Council debate at Averett University on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the Pritchett Auditorium. The debate is open to the public.

City Council candidates who have already responded that they plan to participate include: L.G. "Larry" Campbell Jr., T. David Luther, Albert "Buddy" Rawley Jr., Sherman Saunders, Fred Shanks and Lee Vogler.

"I think it's important that Averett students take advantage of the many opportunities to get involved with the Danville community while they attend school here," said Xavier Crockett, the president of ASCEL. "Both Danville and Averett have a lot to gain by working together on the issues that face us all. I just hope that this event marks the beginning of more students leading community involvement."

Questions for the debate will come from the candidates, local community groups and from Averett students.

The ASCEL student group formed this semester and seeks to provide opportunities for Averett students to become involved in the community, including service projects and public events and community conversations. The group has about 10 active members and already held a voter registration drive on campus earlier this spring.

Pritchett Auditorium is located at 100 Mountain View Ave, and parking for the debate is available along Mountain View, in the parking lot near Alumni Hall at Mountain View, and in the Frith parking lot across from the corner of Woodland Dr. and Townes Street.
