Chalk Talk Features Student-Teachers

May 7, 2012

On April 16, Chalk Talk, Danville Public Schools' weekly news magazine, featured Averett University's student-teachers working with third graders at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. The education majors began working with the third graders in the fall on science and economics for their Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.

Since 2004, Averett's student-teachers have been working with students at Woodrow Wilson at various grade levels providing enrichment and reinforcing what students are learning in class. This year, one of the things they've been working with the third graders on is energy. They have created lesson plans that include a puppet show, vocabulary review, a book, a song and even a snack that relates to energy.

While the third graders are reinforcing what they've learned in class, Averett's student-teachers are learning classroom management skills, how to complete a lesson plan based on the SOL, how to deliver a lesson, how to put the worksheets together that accompany the lesson and how to use visuals.

The 30-minute segment can be seen on River City TV, Comcast Channel 10 or by clicking here (look for the April 16 segement).
