Averett to Recognize Alumni at Homecoming

October 8, 2012

As part of its Homecoming festivities Oct. 19-21 Averett University will recognize eight alumni for their achievements in their communities and their contributions to their alma mater during a special dinner Saturday, Oct. 20 at the home of Averett President Tiffany Franks.

The Recent Alumnus Award will be presented to Andrew Shipman '09 of Easley, S.C., who is deployed as an air traffic controller for the Navy. This award recognizes an alumnus for outstanding achievement and for representing Averett well in their actions.

Four alumni — Tim Carter '94 of Humble, Texas; Bernie Morrell '88 of Sandy Hook, Conn.; Jeff Gilliam '89 of Danville; and Keith Ashworth '85 of Danville — will be recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. All professional pilots, they have worked to bring their fellow alumni back to campus for several years to prepare current students in the department for a career in aviation. This spring, they held their largest Aviation Day to date. The day included a full industry mock interview with feedback, a round robin question and answer time and a panel question time.

The Mary Jo Davis Outstanding Alumnus Award goes to Carol Digesare '68, '71 of Jacksonville, Fla. This award is presented to an alumnus that represents and serves Averett and their community in the way that Mary Jo Davis '55 did, with longevity, passion and commitment.

The University will also induct two former outstanding student-athletes into the Cougar Club Hall of Fame. Brynn Hughes '01 of Danville and Courtney Cowart Phillips '00 of Bedford were volleyball players during their four years at Averett. Each of them hold four conference championships, each earned two Player of the Year recognitions and they both have set multiple school records.

If you would like to purchase tickets to the event, please contact the alumni office at 434-791-7252.
