Averett to Host Internationally Renowned Speaker

Averett University will host international speaker and trainer Spencer Wood on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. Wood, who is the founder and president of the Icebox Athlete, will present "Mental Skills and Toughness Training for the 21st Century Athlete." The event is free.

During the program, Wood will define mental toughness and what it means to be mentally tough both on and off the field/court and discuss how to prepare the mind to meet various challenges.

Wood has spoken to and trained athletes and coaches in the areas of mental skills and toughness training as well as athletic speed, agility and quickness training for years. As an author, teacher and speaker, he has spoken at such events as the Nike Football Coach of the Year Awards, the National Soccer Coaches Association's National Conference, the BCA National Convention and the NFCA National Conference. He is a NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs/Champs Life Skills speaker.

He has implemented mental skills and toughness training workshops and programs for athletes who have competed in the Olympics and the NBA; and his articles have appeared in publications such as "The WBCA" journal and "World Class Coaching."
