Community Partnership Brings Chamber Group to Town

March 1, 2013

Don’t expect your traditional chamber group when you attend the Sixth Floor Trio concert on Friday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. One of their concerts can include a wide array of musical selections including bluegrass, Latin jazz, musical theatre or a movement from a Brahms trio.

The Sixth Floor Trio, which is comprised of Teddy Abrams, Harrison Hollingsworth and Johnny Teyssier, was formed in 2008. They met while they were students at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and are dedicated to creating and performing music that connects different musical styles, communities and artistic disciplines. Their debut performance was in 2009, when they opened for, and collaborated with, renowned conductor and composer Marvin Hamlisch in western North Carolina. Since that auspicious beginning, they have performed at the Kennedy Center twice, World Café Live in Philadelphia, the Central Vermont Chamber Music Festival and various other venues around the country.

In addition to performing concerts, they have created and directed several projects that support their mission of bringing music to the widest audiences, including Random Acts of Culture, which allowed them to collaborate with organizations such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Stanford University, Greyhound and the Ferry Terminal Marketplace in San Francisco along with showcasing the trio at numerous malls, markets, transit center and airports across the country.

The group also serves as artistic directors of GardenMusic, a music festival of the renowned Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami. The inaugural season of GardenMusic took place last spring and included a week of casual and evening performances, educational presentations at numerous local schools, Random Acts of Culture and collaborations with some of Miami’s artists in many genres.

The performance by the Sixth Floor Trio is brought to the area thanks to a community partnership with the Danville Concert Association. For tickets, call 434-792-9242.
