Board of Trustees Welcomes New Members

Averett University's Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the addition of six new members to its ranks. Joining the University's governing body for the next four years are Joseph G. Burke of Chesapeake, William J. Gentry Jr. of Danville, Lisa D. Johnson of Richmond, Margaret G. Lewis of Richmond, Kenneth E. Powell of Richmond and Todd M. Yeatts of Alexandria.

Burke is president of Oriole Educational Associates, LLC in Chesapeake. He is also senior fellow for Asian Initiatives at the Association of Governing Boards, Washington D.C. and president emeritus of Keuka College in Penn Yan, N.Y. Burke is a retired Air Force Colonel − serving for 27 years. He has held several leadership positions in higher education including senior advisor and director of the New Presidents Program for the Council of Independent Colleges in Washington, D.C., member of the board of directors for the Association of South Asia Higher Institutions of Learning in Bangkok, Thailand, and chair of the Presidents Council for the North Eastern Athletic Conference in New York.

Gentry is president and CEO of Piedmont Precision Machine Company, Inc. He serves on the advisory committee for Danville Community College's precision making curriculum and serves on the board for the Danville Science Center.

Johnson is the senior vice president and chief operating officer at Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. She serves on several boards including the Virginia Offshore Wind Development Authority, Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research and chairs the board for the Cooperative Research Council.

Lewis '96 serves as president of the Capital Division for the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). She began her career with HCA as a student nurse in Richmond, and has been promoted up through the ranks. Lewis serves on the board of Smithfield Foods, Inc.; is a governor-appointed member of the Science Museum of Virginia; and a past governor appointee of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia. She is chairman-elect of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association and past secretary/treasurer. In addition, she is a founding board member of LEAD Virginia and Richmond's Future. Lewis has received several awards and recognitions over the years including the Executive Women in Business Achievement Award in 2011; the American Healthcare Executives Regent Award in 2010; and "Washington Business Journal's" Women Who Mean Business Award in 2008.

Powell is the senior vice president of U.S. Trust in Richmond. Powell has served on numerous boards of directors including the Council Development and Finance Agencies; Wintergreen Partners, Inc.; Virginia Chamber of Commerce; Virginia Economic Developers Association; and the Virginia Opera.

Yeatts, a native of Danville, is the manager of government relations for The Boeing Company in Alexandria. A retired Marine, he served for 25 years — 14 years active duty and 11 years in reserve. Yeatts is a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647, serves on the board of directors for the Arlington County Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the commission for the Arlington County Economic Development Commission and serves on the transportation committee for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
