Concert on the Lawn

August 9, 2013

Averett will launch its 2013-14 Arts@Averett Series on Saturday, Sept 7 at 7:30 p.m. when The Barefoot Movement performs on the Student Center lawn. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and join us for what is sure to be a performance that makes you, well, want to take your shoes off and dance in the grass. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Barefoot Movement's sound is a blend of old Southern front porch Bluegrass improvisation while being immediately accessible to the modern era. The group was formed by Noah Wall, singer and fiddler, and Tommy Norris, mandolin player, when they were in high school. Bassist Hasee Ciaccio joined the group in 2011. Their name came about due to Noah's tendency to remove her shoes during shows.

The group has performed with, or opened for, such artists as Ricky Skaggs, Peter Rowan, Jim Lauderdale and Dale Ann Bradley.

This year they have released a new album "Figures of the Year." The record is a journey through a year, each song telling its part of the larger story, with both original and traditional numbers.

Come to the concert early and check out the Senior Art Show of Ashley Green in Jut's Café, on the lower level of the Student Center. Ashley's artwork will be on display Aug. 29 through Sept. 25. The art show is free and open to the public.
