Averett Earns High Marks From Three More Third Party Reviewers

Last week, Averett University learned that it has been ranked one of the Best in the Southeast in The Princeton Review's "2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region." This week, more accolades have come Averett's way from three other third party reviewers. has named the University a 2013-2014 College of Distinction. has ranked Averett third in Virginia for campus safety. "We are honored to be named a College of Distinction," said Dr. Janet Laughlin, vice president of academic affairs. "This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgement of the hard work of so many people, from administration to faculty and staff."

Averett was chosen as a College of Distinction based on its continued commitment to four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes. Colleges of Distinction is an online college guide that looks at schools that are the best places to learn, grow and succeed.

Recognition of its safety efforts is also important as Averett, like any other educational institution, works hard to make student safety a priority.

"The recognition by as the third safest campus in Virginia is humbling," said Jamie Walker, director of security. "For those of us who work security at the University, keeping all of our students safe is just an important part of our job, and not something we expect to be recognized for." is a leading website for college information. In their list, they rank schools in the following categories: safest four-year or above schools, safest public state universities and safest private colleges and universities. To compile the list, Cleary and FBI data was used to analyze 1,407 colleges and universities to assign safety ratings. The ratings are based on the number of weapon occurrences, drugs, burglary, vehicle theft, arson, larceny, robbery, forcible and non-forcible rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter and aggravated assault. (AC Online) has identified the Virginia colleges and universities with the greatest lifetime return on investment – ranking Averett as 23rd out of 28 public and private institutions in Virginia. According to AC Online, graduates from these schools enjoy the largest earnings gap between non-degree holders over 30 years, and earn more on average than graduates from other Virginia schools.
