Marcy & Zina to Perform at Averett

September 23, 2013

Averett University's Arts@Averett Series will host two of the hottest up and coming writers for Broadway and Disney on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the back dining hall of the Student Center (third floor). The Marcy and Zina Show's Cabaret Act is free and open to the public.

"Marcy and Zina write songs about urban life using witty and urbane lyrics," said Dr. Anne Lewis, associate professor of music. "Their songs focus on social issues and language with words people can identify with."

Zina Goldrich, composer, and Marcy Heisler, lyricist, wrote "Dear Edwina," a kids musical theatre production; "Junie B. Jones;" and "Taylor the Latte Boy," which was popularized by Kristin Chenoweth. They were the first women ever to receive the 2009 Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting. They have also been nominated for the 2009 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Lyrics and Music for "Dear Edwina" and the Lucille Lortel Award for "Junie B. Jones."

The duo has provided original songs for The Disney Channel, Disney Interactive and Feature Animation projects, Disney Theatricals, PBS and Nickelodeon. They have toured nationally and internationally, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Canada's "Juste Pour Rire" comedy festival.
