"Show Vesa Some Love Challenge"

January 30, 2014

During the month of February, Averett is looking for a few good men and women – 100 to be exact – who will make a gift in any amount to the "Show Vesa Some Love Challenge." The challenge was created by alumnus Rick Roccesano '81, who wanted to change the misconception that small gifts to the University's capital campaign don't make an impact.

In his challenge, Roccesano is encouraging alumni, faculty, staff and friends to make a contribution in any amount toward the Vesa Hiltunen Tennis Complex. It is his hope that people will join together to help honor Hiltunen. Hiltunen served as the University's director of athletics for many years as well as coached several sports, including tennis.

If the goal is reached, Roccesano will make a $25,000 contribution to support the $1.5 million project. All donors to the new tennis complex will be recognized on a plaque at the new facility.

"I know there is a lot of love out there for Vesa, and the impact he has had on various members of the Averett family," Roccesano said. "It is time to step up and 'Show Vesa Some Love' and honor him, while leaving a legacy of our own."

The new tennis complex will be built at the University's North Campus and will feature lighted courts, public restrooms, stands for spectators and locker areas for teams. Access will be granted to the public when not in use by the tennis programs.

For more information about this special campaign, or if you and some friends are interested in sponsoring a court or even matching Roccesano's challenge, call Sam Ferguson '97, director of annual giving programs, at 434-791-7112, or visit
