Title IX: Pass it On

February 3, 2014

This February, in celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Averett will celebrate Title IX and the changes it brought about for girls and women across the nation during a women's basketball game against Greensboro College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Grant Center.

During half-time, student-athletes − both men and women − will don vintage uniforms and participate in a 6-on-6 basketball game under the pre-Title IX rules of women's basketball.

The athletics department has selected the theme of 'Pass it On: Title IX here to stay, generation nine here to play' emphasizing the past struggle for equality in sport and recognizing the progress of female athletes since Title IX was signed into law in 1972.

In addition to the 1950's exhibition game, the University will have photos from Averett's women's teams from the 1930s-1970s on display in the lobby, and will be giving away t-shirts and other prizes.

Everyone is encouraged to come out to honor all female athletes – past, current and future and enjoy this free, family-friendly event, which is sponsored by Averett athletics and Caswell Pines Golf Course.
