Changes in GPS Leadership Announced

April 7, 2014

Averett University is pleased to announce the appointment of a strong leadership team for its Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program. Collectively, the two individuals bring more than 35 years of teaching and administrative experience in the GPS Program to the table. Dr. Fred Bolton is Averett's new acting associate vice president of distance education and dean of GPS. Dr. Alice Obenchain-Leeson '92 has been named the new acting dean of distance education programs and will provide leadership for academic program assessment, development and curricular services.

"I have every confidence that with them at the helm, our GPS Program's best days are yet to come," said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. "We are in the midst of multiple new academic program launches; and we are excited about the increased opportunities these new programs provide for attracting and serving adult students."

Bolton has been a member of the Averett staff since 1999. He currently serves as chair of the leadership studies minor, and he has been engaged in developing public administration programs for the University at the graduate and undergraduate level. A former dean of the GPS Program, he has been actively involved in developing programs to assist adults and members of the military community achieve their education goals for more than twenty years.

Obenchain-Leeson joined the Averett community in 1993, and she has been a member of the teaching faculty since 2002. She has served as professor of business administration in the GPS program since 2011, and she has also previously served as acting dean of the GPS Program. She has published various articles in the "International Journal of Global Management Studies," "Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship," "Journal of Christian Higher Education" and the "Liberty Business Review."

Averett University is proud to be an educational pioneer serving adult learners throughout the Commonwealth for the past 25 years.
