Averett Community Reaches Out to Haiti

January 28, 2010

Campus wide efforts to benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake continue. The men's soccer team has already collected clothes and shipped them. Now, other members of the Averett community are stepping up as well.

Items (such as toiletry/personal hygiene, combs/brushes, candy, washcloths, etc.) are being collected for God's Pit Crew's blessing buckets. A box is set up in front of Dr. Deb DeMarey's office (Frith 312) to collect any donations.

Laura Meder's environmental problems class is sponsoring a "Penny Drive for Haiti" as well as a canned food drive. The canned goods will be donated to God's Pit Crew and the pennies to an organization to be determined later. Penny jars are located in Jut's Cafe, the office area of 3rd and 4th Frith and outside the registrar's office. Canned goods boxes are located in the office areas of 3rd and 4th Frith.

Averett has teamed up with the Salvation Army for an additional clothing drive. All clothes collected from January 25 to February 12 will be going to help the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti. Clothes will be collected at various locations: Fugate Lobby, the Residence Life Office and the Student Center.

Averett flight operations major and library student employee Chris Nelson is partnering with the Averett Library to collect spare change. Contributed funds will be taken to the local chapter of the American Red Cross to be sent to Haiti. A contribution container also has been placed at the Averett Library Circulation Desk.

The university recently hired a chaplain, Jamie Williford, who will coordinate student volunteer efforts at Averett.
