Member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble to Perform at Averett

February 4, 2010

The Danville area is in for a treat Feb. 23 as world renowned pianist Joel Fan visits Averett as part of the university's Arts@Averett Series. Fan's performance, which is this year's Julian and Elnora Light Memorial Concert, is at 7:30 p.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

Fan's eclectic repertoire covers traditional piano classics and concertos, his own piano transcriptions and cadenzas and newly commissioned works.

A winner of the New York Philharmonic's Young People's Concert Auditions, Fan began performing at the age of 11 with the Philharmonic. Since then he has toured the world with various orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Albany Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the London Sinfonietta.

Fan is a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and has performed with the ensemble at a number of venues including Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

He graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree and has a master's degree in piano performance from Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher.

For more information about Fan's performance contact Dr. Anne Lewis at 791-5600.
