Wilkerson Named Director of Annual Giving Programs

April 23, 2010

Averett University has named M. Joseph Wilkerson as its new director of annual giving programs. Wilkerson joined Averett in 2005 and currently serves as assistant dean of students.

In his new position, Wilkerson's duties will include revitalizing an annual giving program that encourages donors to support Averett through unrestricted giving, building a program for donor stewardship, and creating a society of giving and a comprehensive donor relations program for constituents who support Averett with gifts of $1,000 or more.

"Joey has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and organizational skills," said Page Stooks, Averett vice president for institutional advancement. "He is a self-starter and will bring a great deal of enthusiasm to this position. We are pleased to welcome him as the newest member of our institutional advancement team."

During his time at Averett, Wilkerson has redesigned and streamlined the New Student Orientation program, developed and implemented a first-year experience course for freshmen, coordinated Averett's first CHAMPS/Life Skills program for student-athletes and assisted with the opening of the new Student Center and fitness center. In 2006-2007, he was named Staff Person of the Year.

"We will miss Joey's presence in student life but recognize that this new opportunity will allow him to further his career goals," said Charles Harris, executive vice president. "Joey's organizational skills, his outstanding work ethic and his ability to get along with people from a variety of backgrounds will insure his success in this new role."

Prior to joining Averett, Wilkerson was on the staffs of Radford University and Virginia Tech. He holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Radford, and in 2007 he earned his MBA from Averett.
