Averett Guarantees Scholarships for Local High School Leadership Program Graduates

April 27, 2010

Averett University announced today that it will award a $5,000 renewable scholarship to every high school student who completes the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce's Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends Averett University. The scholarship can be utilized for up to four years for a total award of $20,000 and will be available to Junior Leadership Southside graduates beginning with the 2010-2011 class.

"We want to recognize these students' accomplishments and to make it possible for these emerging leaders to remain here in our region," said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. "These students represent some of our area's best and brightest talents. They are our future leaders. We are pleased to be able to offer these students Averett scholarships and the opportunity to experience the benefits of an Averett education."

Franks notes that scholarship recipients will continue their leadership training at Averett by taking leadership roles in student-led organizations.

"Leadership program graduates will continue to develop their leadership skills at Averett and be well-prepared for leadership positions once they graduate," Franks said.

"We encourage all of our students to gains hands-on experience along with their classroom study. Averett will be a great fit for Junior Leadership graduates who wish to continue to hone their leadership skills."

The Junior Leadership Southside Program, which began in 2009, is an eight-month program providing leadership orientation and development to local high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program includes monthly sessions ranging from three to six hours in length and is held on school holidays, after school and on Saturdays. These monthly sessions are held at local businesses, and participants are exposed to leadership development activities and opportunities in the Southside Region.

"We are thrilled with Averett's scholarship announcement for our Junior Leadership participants," commented Chamber President Laurie S. Moran, CCE. "This is a great partnership that will allow our young people to continue their leadership development throughout their college careers."

Information and applications for the Junior Leadership Southside Program are available on the Chamber's website or by contacting the Chamber at (434) 836-6990 or Applications are due by May 17, 2010.
